WARRIOR’S POSSESSION by Gianna Simone

img_0813      WARRIOR’S POSSESSION by Gianna Simone

The historical erotic novel Warrior’s Possession by Gianna Simone is book one in the Medieval Warrior’s Legends series and is about an arranged marriage ordered by King Edward I of Lady Gillian Marlowe to Royce Langley, Earl of Manchester, after Gillian’s father dies. Gillian, a hot tempered vixen will not succumb to the warrior’s domineering commands, and Royce will not yield to this feisty, independent temptress’s ways, but they must learn to coexist in order to have a successful alliance.

This book was meh for me. I love reading historical romance and this novel was lacking in that there was not much historical background provided. I also found that there was no time for the reader’s anticipation to build before jumping right to the love scenes. The characters didn’t have time to develop and fell flat for me with no intimate connection beyond the bedroom. I will say though, the steamy parts were good; however, I like depth in a storyline and this just didn’t provide that for me. I rate this 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you NetGalley and Romance Beckons Publishing for providing a copy of this novel in exchange for a fair review.

THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR by Shari Lapena

img_0808     THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR by Shari Lapena

The premise of The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena is about a couple who decide to leave their six month baby at home after the babysitter cancels to attend a dinner party at the neighbours next door. Between their half-hour checks, their baby mysteriously disappears from her crib.

This book was just mediocre. It started off with a lot of promise, but started to lose its lustre about halfway through with thin and oftentimes guessable plot turns and characters that lacked depth and believability. The writing was also too simplistic for my taste and almost written like an instruction manual; like I wouldn’t be able to figure things out on my own. The ending was unsatisfying, contrived and left me feeling jilted. I read quite a few mystery thrillers so the plot has to be gripping, realistic and sadistically surprising to get a 5 star rating. I rate this book 2.5 out of 5 stars.

HERE AND GONE by Haylen Beck

img_0803    Here and Gone by Haylen Beck

Here and Gone by Haylen Beck is about an abused woman on the run with her two small children who encounters trouble when she’s pulled over by a local sheriff of an Arizona town she’s passing through on her way to safety in California. Locked in a cell, she has no idea where her children are or if she’ll ever get to see them again. Across the country, the news catches the attention of a man, who uncannily has suffered the same fate and hopes to find out what happened to his own daughter.

This suspense thriller is slow to start but does become quite interesting as the novel progresses. It is a quick and easy read. I rate it 4 stars out of 5 stars.

RAW DEAL by Cherrie Lynn

img_0801  RAW DEAL by Cherrie Lynn

The premise of this story is about a grieving sister of a man accidentally killed in a MMA cage fight by his opponent. Brought together under horrible circumstances, a heated passion blooms between Savannah and the man who killed her brother, Mike “Red Reaper” Larson, but must be kept under wraps in order to protect her family from further anguish.

One word: HOT. The writing is well-done and there is some real meat to this storyline, not just fluff. I was drawn into the story quite quickly as the plot was well thought-out, funny at times, and very steamy. The characters were believable and I found myself smiling and rooting for them. 5 out of 5 stars (especially the steamy parts). I can’t wait to find out if a romance blooms for the Larson brother Zane and the widow!

Is A Worry Worrying You? by Ferida Wolff and Harriet May Savitz

img_0797  Is A Worry Worrying You? by Ferida Wolff and Harriet May Savitz

This children’s book couldn’t’ve come at a better time with the Holidays! Adults forget that children have anxiety and are worrisome too. This book is a great reminder that we all have anxiety and provides advice and strategies on how to manage our worry, which all children will benefit from. Educators can use this as a teaching tool in their classrooms. I especially loved the humour and the enduring illustrations. 5 out of 5 stars.

THE MASK OF SANITY By Jacob M. Appel

img_0789      THE MASK OF SANITY By Jacob M. Appel

The Mask of Sanity written by Jacob M. Appel is an intriguing account written from a sociopath’s point of view. The main character, Balint, is a chief cardiologist who seems like a typical middle-aged, doctor, husband, and father, however, the inner-workings of his mind and overly inflated ego are dark and compelling as he secretly plots the demise of his enemy. Appel builds suspense with tantalizing glimpses of menace and obsession and has cleverly crafted a twisted tale of planned and justified murders. I read the book in an entire sitting and couldn’t put it down. There were no lulls in the surreal plot and it consistently held my attention from beginning to end. You will not be disappointed. 5 out of 5 stars.

GILDED CAGE by Vic James

img_0794      GILDED CAGE by Vic James

Gilded Cage by Vic James is an aptly named novel about a dystopian world where classes exist in a modern-day version of Britain. The suppressed civilians have no choice but to serve a ten year sentence as slaves to the Equals who own them. This YA debut novel is dark, yet intriguingly charming filled with magic, romance, and hope as the resilience of the slaves is demonstrated over and over again. The masterful plot, told through many character’s point of view keeps the novel moving along at a perfect pace weaving together the horrors and injustice suffered in the slavedays and forbidden love between master and slave.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book, but I must say I loved it and was excited to learn it’s part of a series. 5 out of 5 stars.
