BABY TEETH by ZOJE STAGE

IMG_1141   BABY TEETH by ZOJE STAGE

Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage is a mystery/thriller about a disturbed seven year, Hanna, and her mother, Suzette. Hanna refuses to speak, is abusive, behaves appallingly, and hates her mother. Alex, Hanna’s father, is oblivious of Hanna’s disturbing behaviour, much of which Suzette has stopped mentioning as it’s causing strife in their marriage. Hanna just wants her mother gone… at any cost.

I was enraptured from the first page and could not put it down. It was spooky to see how manipulative, calculating, and shrewd Hanna was in masterminding her plans. Very scary indeed! For a debut novel, I’d say Zoje Stage nailed it and will now be on my radar. I rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. Recommended for anyone who loves creepy page-turners.

SOLD ON A MONDAY BY KRISTINA MCMORRIS

IMG_1305      SOLD ON A MONDAY BY KRISTINA MCMORRIS

Sold on a Monday by Kristina McMorris is a delightful and harrowing historical rendition of the struggles endured during the Dirty Thirties. Feature writer for a Philadelphia newspaper, Ellis Reed, takes a picture of two children innocently playing in front of their farmhouse with an unfathomable sign in the background reading “2 Children for Sale.” Lillian Palmer, secretary at the same newspaper, sees the intriguing photo and submits it to her boss and soon finds herself embroiled in a sticky situation with Ellis. Now they must undo the catastrophic mistake they’ve made. This photograph and the heartbreaking journey they embark on to discover what happened to the two children after they were sold change Ellis and Lilly’s lives forever. If you like historical fiction, you’ll really enjoy this read. I rate this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars.

TO THE BRIDGE BY NANCY ROMMELMANN

IMG_1228    TO THE BRIDGE BY NANCY ROMMELMANN

To the Bridge by Nancy Rommelmann is a true crime novel or according to the author “reported non-fiction” with reconstructed true events.

Journalist Nancy Rommelmann writes an interesting account of what took place on that fateful night on May 23, 2009 when Amanda Stott-Smith dropped her four and seven year old children from the Sellwood Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Amanda, battling depression and substance abuse, lived with her parents after her marriage to Jason fell apart. Amanda had a son from a previous relationship, but only chose to kill Jason’s children. Was it revenge or was she protecting her children from a life of constant abuse?

An interesting read for sure but a tad long. True crime books are insightful as they delve into the workings of the inner psyche and try to understand how a mother could harm her own children. What drove Amanda to this point? I rate this novel 3.5 out of 5 stars.

STRONG HOLD BY SARAH CASTILLE

IMG_1277     STRONG HOLD BY SARAH CASTILLE

Strong Hold is the 5th instalment of the Redemption erotica romance series by Sarah Castille and focuses on Shaylla and Zack’s story.

Ballet dancer turned amateur MMA fighter Shayla “Shilla the Killa” Tyler thought she was over her broken heart when Zack left her seven years ago; however, he’s back and he’s now at her club recruiting fighters for MEFC, a prestigious MMA promotion company and he has his sights set on locking Shayla down, both in the ring and in the bedroom.

Sarah Castille does not disappoint, but I have to say, this story was not up-to-par with her others. Even though it’s part of a series, you can read this book as a stand-alone as each novel focuses on a different set of characters within the same fight club, but of course it’s always fun to read them all. I rate this novel 3.5 out of 5 on the hot scale. Check my blog to read the review for 4th book, Fighting Attraction. (If you enjoy reading Castille novels, I highly recommend reading the Sinner’s Tribe Motorcycle Club series, my favourite Sarah Castille series).

JAR OF HEARTS BY JENNIFER HILLIER

IMG_1227      JAR OF HEARTS BY JENNIFER HILLIER

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier is a mystery/thriller about a group of three friends whose lives all took a different turn one fateful night when they were teenagers. At the age of 16, Angela disappeared without a trace only to be found years later buried in a shallow grave. Georgina, a powerful executive, is accused of participanting in and covering up Angela’s grisly murder with her then high school boyfriend Calvin James, now infamously known as the Sweetbay Strangler. Finally, Kaiser, still secretly in love with Geo, became a police detective who can’t seem to let Angela’s murder go and is obsessed with reapprehending the Sweetbay serial murderer who escaped.

This book was unputdownable! Riveting, shocking, and full of twists and turns that will leave you wishing for more. Well written with believable characters, told from Geo and Kai’s differing perspectives interspersed with flashes from the past teasing out the circumstances leading up to Angela’s murder. I highly recommend this novel to lovers of the thriller genre. I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars.

The Death of Mrs. Westaway is about a wealthy family with many hidden secrets.

She’s already a pro at deception, what’s one more scam that could finally turn her life around.

Another great thriller from Ruth Ware! I’ve read all four of Ruth Ware’s novels and this one is by far my favorite. I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.

TWO DUKES ARE BETTER THAN ONE BY LORNA JAMES

IMG_1260      Two Dukes are Better Than One by Lorna James

Two Dukes are Better Than One by Lorna James is an erotica novel about a young woman named Sophia who must marry the Duke of Kendall in order to clear her father’s gambling debt, but gets more than she bargained for when her husband’s best friend, the Duke of Bedford, is part of the deal.

The story was just okay, some parts were cheesy while others parts were witty and fun; however, the ménage à trois sex scenes totally made up for the lacking storyline. A quick read! I rate this novel 3.5 out of 5 stars.
