BABY TEETH by ZOJE STAGE

IMG_1141   BABY TEETH by ZOJE STAGE

Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage is a mystery/thriller about a disturbed seven year, Hanna, and her mother, Suzette. Hanna refuses to speak, is abusive, behaves appallingly, and hates her mother. Alex, Hanna’s father, is oblivious of Hanna’s disturbing behaviour, much of which Suzette has stopped mentioning as it’s causing strife in their marriage. Hanna just wants her mother gone… at any cost.

I was enraptured from the first page and could not put it down. It was spooky to see how manipulative, calculating, and shrewd Hanna was in masterminding her plans. Very scary indeed! For a debut novel, I’d say Zoje Stage nailed it and will now be on my radar. I rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. Recommended for anyone who loves creepy page-turners.

EVERY NOTE PLAYED by LISA GENOVA

IMG_1139   EVERY NOTE PLAYED by LISA GENOVA

Every Note Played by Lisa Genova is a general fiction book about the devastating disease ALS.

Richard, an accomplished concert pianist, develops symptoms that at first are frustratingly annoying, but soon become apparent that they’re more than just mishaps and clumsiness, but something alarmingly more serious. With a diagnosis of ALS, Richard’s world and life are simply over. His ex-wife, Karina, hears through the grapevine about his diagnosis and tries to offer support but realizes that Richard wants no part of it.

Richard struggles with losing his independence; Karina’s torn between wanting to comfort Richard and being saddled with being his constant caregiver. This story will make you weep for the pain and hardships endured and cherish how remarkable life is.

This novel was such an interesting read. It is poignantly written and doesn’t bog the reader down with medical jargon and ALS facts, but is interwoven into the character’s experiences and life. I have read every one of Lisa Genova’s books and absolutely LOVE them. Recommended read for sure! I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars.

A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan is a historical novel that begins in1838 and is about the line of Orchiere women and their craft of magic passed down through several generations from mother to daughter.

This story is told from the perspectives of five generations of witches who each struggle with the secret magic she possesses. It is quite a compelling read with vivid descriptions and well-rounded characters. I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend reading this novel if you enjoy reading about magic although this story is about so much more! I really enjoyed each witch’s journey and was sad to see it end.

SHE’S NOT THERE by JOY FIELDING

IMG_1071   SHE’S NOT THERE by JOY FIELDING

She’s Not There by Joy Fielding is a psychological thriller about the kidnapping of a two year old girl from a Mexican resort while her parents are at a dinner party close.

This story is told from the mother’s tormented perspective and flips back and forth from past to present giving the reader glimpses into what happened that night and how their lives were devastatingly impacted by the traumatic events of that night fifteen years prior when Samantha disappeared. Caroline Shipley is continually blamed and ridiculed by the press, the community, and her own family, inevitably costing her her marriage and teaching career.

This story has a familiar backstory and made me think of the true crime and kidnapping of Maddie McCann in Algarve, Portugal in 2007 under similar circumstances.

I have always been a fan of Joy Fielding’s books and jumped at the chance to read her latest thriller. I was not disappointed and highly recommend this novel if you like this genre. I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.

KATWALK By MARIA MURNANE

IMG_1031    KATWALK By MARIA MURNANE

Katwalk by Maria Murnane is a women’s fiction novel about a woman who overcomes her extreme shyness and insecurity and ends up having the most freeing and uninhibited time of her life. Katrina Lynden, an accountant at an advertising agency in California, reluctantly agrees to quit her job and spend two months with her outgoing best friend in New York City. When her best friend suddenly backs out days before the trip, totally out of character for Katrina, she decides to go anyway as she has nothing to lose since she recently moved in with her controlling parents.

This is the third novel I’ve read by Murnane and really enjoyed Kat’s journey. It was a well-written and enjoyable quick read. A very light-hearted, inspiring read. I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.

THE VISITORS By CATHERINE BURNS

IMG_1011     THE VISITORS By CATHERINE BURNS

The Visitors by Catherine Burns is a mystery/thriller is about two single siblings who have lived together most of their life. Marion is a spinster who has convinced herself that she can’t stay alone and take care of herself and therefore is reliant on her older brother John. John is a loner and spends much of his time in the cellar. Unbeknownst to outsiders is that John has a sadistic side and forces Marion into situations she doesn’t know how to get out of for fear of John’s blistering temper and sometimes menacing hatred toward her. Marion craves any type of affection and puts up with John’s manipulative ways for fear of being alone.

It’s hard to believe Marion is so daft, but rather in denial. She knew about the “Visitors” but chose to push the thoughts from her mind and pretend everything was normal. I suppose it was her way of dealing with the situation and clearly she doesn’t have all her faculties, but has startling moments of clarity and common sense when dealing with John. I like how it switches from past to present so the reader can gain insight into how John became so evil. Pretty good for a debut novel. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
